Here’s How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows (and Make Them White & Fresh Again)

Over time, bed pillows absorb sweat, oils, and dust, which can leave them yellowed and with an unpleasant smell. Instead of throwing them away, you can restore them with a simple cleaning method that works surprisingly well.

Start by checking the care label to make sure your pillows are machine washable (most synthetic and down pillows are). Place two pillows in the washing machine at once to keep it balanced. Use hot water and a mild detergent, then add a natural booster like baking soda to help lift stains and neutralize odors.

For whitening and deodorizing, add a small amount of white vinegar during the rinse cycle. This helps break down residue and leaves the pillows smelling fresh without harsh chemicals. Avoid using too much detergent, as buildup can make pillows feel stiff.

After washing, it’s important to dry them completely to prevent mildew. Tumble dry on low heat and toss in a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help fluff them back to shape. Make sure there’s no moisture left inside before using them again.

With regular cleaning every few months, your pillows can stay fresh, bright, and comfortable—no need to replace them so often.
